The Tide Turns in San Lorenzo’s Favor.
By: Mauro | May 1st, 2008The first half was all it was built up to be. Both teams attacking relentlessly and overall a great football match with plenty of evidence that both teams wanted to win this match. With little travel involved here, (seriously, maybe a 20 minute bus ride) this tie could go either way. Adn because the match was not far, the away support was fantastic. Check the vid below.
San Lorenzo came out guns blazing from the get go so it was no surprise that they scored first. Andrés Silvera connected with a cross from Adrián González and he beat Juan Pablo Carrizo with a fantastic finish. River lost possession of the ball but even so still found a way to create danger for San Lorenzo with precise passing on the counter and hard runs forward from Augusto Fernández and Paulo Ferrari.
The equalizer came off a great play in the center which ended on a cross from Ferrari who served it up for Radamel Falcao Garcia to get a good head on it. Orión could only watch. With that the first half was over and we had a just result from a great first half.
The second half had more possession than the first on the part of the host team. River seemed like they delved deeper and deeper into their own half. Still, they proved to be very dangerous on the counter. While both sides had close calls, the match seemed destined to end at the 1-1 deadlock.
Near the end, Alexis Sanchez had a hand ball called on him inside the penalty area and the ref whistled for the penalty kick for San Lorenzo. González set it up and buried it for the boys from Boedo. They stole the draw right from under the River Plate players and fans.
While this result does not vary from the Boca-Cruzeiro result, the feeling is different since both Cruzeiro’s away goal and San Lorenzo’s game winning goal came late in the match. Cruzeiro’s feeling more like a draw and San Lorenzo’s feeling like a true win and defeat for the Millionarios.
I had this one going the opposite way. 2-1 to River. Ramón Díaz got the best of us this time. There was a goal’s difference between the two squads but it was San Lorenzo who was one better. With a 1-0 at the Monumental next week, River can go through thanks to Falcao’s away goal.
