Sao Paulo Struggle At Home But Win and Qualify Anyway.
By: Mauro | April 24th, 2008Sao Paulo had trouble doing quite a few things at the Morumbi last night. They were unable to keep possession in the midfield and put plays together that created some kind of danger. But thanks to Rogerio Ceni’s incredible night, (what you want in a keeper when the rest of the squad is having an off night) Sao Paulo were able to stay in the game.
Atletico Nacional seemed to settle in nicely in a match where they were given the ball, given the pitch and had not much more to do than to push forward. This gave them a few opportunites to take the lead but again, with any other keeper that might have been possible, but with Rogerio Ceni under the posts, it wasn’t going to happen.
In the 38th minute, Alex Silva’s header found the back of the net. The goal came from a broken play, a rejected cross from the Colombian defense that was picked up Jorge Wágner and sent in for Silva’s to put away.
The second half was more of the same, Colombians with possession and Brazilians watching and waiting to counter. This was basically the Rogerio Ceni show. Everyone else seemed oddly checked out. Against a greater opponent I have a few reservations about Sao Paulo. I expected them to be one of the top contenders this year, they have been soft. Or maybe their group was really that tough. After last night’s performance, I’m still far from convinced.
I had this match going 2-1. Two more goals than were actually scored but the difference between the two squads was one goal. Not bad.
