River Plate Demolish San Martin.
By: Mauro | April 18th, 2008Instead of walking into this match thinking about the 2-0 loss in their opening match against tonight’s opponents, River came out onto the pitch with a bit of a chip on their shoulder. They were on their home field and they were not going to be denied. Despite a weeks worth of talking about how San Martin were going to come out and look to take the match, they came out with four men in the back and only two of their players were positioned in the offensive part of the pitch. A little modest but it allowed River goal keeper Juan Pablo Carrizo the best seat in the house to watch his teammates take care of business. And take care of it they did.
The first opportunity to score for River came in the 10th minute for Falcao who sent it just wide of the left post and the opportunities didn’t end until the end of the match with Abreu getting his hat-trick and scoring River’s last goal of the match in the 90th minute. Falcao managed a goal off his back heel which was fantastic, Abreu’s goals were all different (off his left, right and then a header) and showed his range. And Rios who came off the bench, scored one as well, off a rebound from the keeper.
River was top to bottom the better team on the pitch and the midfield played an excellent match with precision passing and dangerous runs.
I had this match going 3-1, but River was far more generous with their final 5-0 score that qualified them into the next round along with CF America from Mexico who, despite losing last night, they qualified over Universidad Catolica.
