Pelé’s Team Loses in Guadalajara.
By: Mauro | April 10th, 2008Chivas de Guadalajara vs. Santos FC (Estadio Jalisco, Guadalajara, Mexico)
Chivas renew their hopes to qualify for the next round after holding off Santos FC in a hotly contested match in Guadalajara. Chivas had gone three matches in this competition without scoring a single goal so this was the match to break that curse. Unfortunately for Chivas, they do not depend solely on themselves to qualify for the next round. They have to win their match, away at San José, which will not be easy given the 2,100 meters of elevation between the two home grounds and hope that Cúcuta either draw or win at Santos in the last match. So far, the elevation hasn’t been the boogeyman that Brazilian teams and Sepp Blatter thought it would be.
Santos on the other hand, let a golden opportunity to sew the group up, slip through their fingers. Had they won this match, that would have been it and they could have rested players in the last match. Santos’ final match begins before Chivas’ final match so they won’t have the luxury of knowing the result of the Chivas match before they hit the pitch. Santos will have to blindly play to win, which shouldn’t be tough given that they are at home and Cúcuta will most likely field a B squad since the outcomes of the last matches will not affect their status but possibly their place in the group.
