Lanús With a Big Away Win Qualify and Eliminate Danubio
By: Mauro | April 16th, 2008Danubio FC vs. Club Atlético Lanús (Estadio Parque Central, Montevideo, Uruguay)
Coming into this match, Danubio’s chances to qualify for the next round were slim to none. They had dropped points at home which could easily spell the end for your chances to advance since winning away is so difficult. They needed a 3-0 result in order to qualify. While Danubio had won the 2006/2007 Uruguayan league, their form has fallen since the transfer of some of their key players.
Recent Argentine Apertura champions, Lanús had played below their potential so far in the group stage but it was due to some injuries to key players. While this club’s first team is really good and solid, in all honesty, once the once the starters are off the pitch, the talent gap really shows.
One more point, this is probably the best case away match scenario. I believe both qualified teams in this group have won on this pitch, not to say that Danubio’s poor form didn’t have anything to do with it, but the trip is short, the language is the same, I’d even venture to say that the weather was the same and there’s no time difference. Not bad for an away match where some teams have to travel to North America from deep South America.
Lanús managed to take the ball from Danubio after an early flurry of opportunities from the home side, and controlled the entire match. Seba Blanco scored the first goal for Lanús in the 53rd minute and José Sand added the second goal 11 minutes later. Danubio managed to get one back when Cristian Bardaro (ex-Banfield) scored in the 83rd minute but it was far too late for Danubio to do anything to win the match at that point.
I had this one ending in a draw, away matches are tough to predict, the chances of this one happening were good… I was close and hinted at the win. Ah well, I suck.
