Group 5 Decided Tonight!
By: Mauro | April 17th, 2008I want to apologize since it looks like I will not be able to provide you all with the proper previews for tonight’s matches. What I will provide in this very post is the times the matches are televised and my predictions for each match, sort of a mini preview of all the matches in one post.
Fluminense FC vs. LDU Quito (Estadio Laranjeiras, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)
LIVE @ 3pm PST on Fox Sports Español

Bottom line: Flu and LDU are just out there to sew up the stat sheets. This group is all but over and LDU will supposedly be fielding an alternate squad, resting their best players for their Ecuadorian league match this weekend. My pick: 2-1 to Flu.
Universidad Catolica vs. CF America (Estadio San Carlos de Apoquindo, Santiago, Chile)
LIVE @ 5:30pm PST on Fox Sports Español

Bottom Line: Both teams need the win to qualify (well America need the win to win the group but they qualify with a draw), look for a very hard fought match. America are much better in the Libertadores than they are in the Mexican league. Good news for U. Catolica? America has not won either of their prior away matches but Catolica has dropped one of their prior home matches. My pick: 1-1, Catolica get the late goal to tie the match.
CA River Plate vs. Universidad San Martin (Estadio Monumental, Buenos Aires, Argentina)
Tape delay (Booo!) @ 9pm PST on Fox Sports Español

Bottom Line: River need only a draw to qualify but will look for a win at their grounds. San Martin need the win by at least 3-0 to qualify over River. My pick: River win (Duh!) 3-1 tonight. But if Simeone decides to start Abreu and play Falcao further back, only a 2-1 win and we’ll suffer with a San Martin onslaught in the last 15 minutes.
I’ll be back tomorrow and normal match review service will resume.
Check the CONMEBOL website for final Group 5 standings and results.

[...] I had this one going 1-1 with neither team able to beat each other. The actual score didn’t hurt America’s chances of qualifying. One of the few groups where 9 points would have got you into the second round. Another note of interest is, there were no draws in this group. All teams, either won or lost. [...]

[...] players. It’s also no surprise that Cicero ended up scoring off a header in the 31st minute. I had this match going 2-1 to Flu. The goal difference is the same, Flu was one goal better than LDU Quito [...]
