Fluminense break the curse; Libertad.
By: Mauro | April 3rd, 2008Fluminense supporters, players and club directors have been waiting for this moment for a long time. Fluminense have qualified for the 2nd round with their 2-0 victory over Libertad at home last night. Simultaneously, the dark horse/cinderella team from the 2006 edition of the Libertadores, Libertad of Paraguay are out of the running for advancing on. Despite having two matches to play in this group, LDU Quito and Flu are already qualified for the next round.
Despite the score line, Libertad did put up a decent fight but being the visitors it was only a matter of time before Flu took advantage of that fact. Cicero got the header off a free kick with service from Dario Conca. (BTW, this kid is crazy good. Keep an eye on him) The second goal was also off a free kick, Thiago Silva got the header to take his team up 2-0. From then until the end it was all Flu. They hit the post a few times and that was all she wrote.
Flu still have two matches to play but this group is all sewn up. They travel to Buenos Aires to play Arsenal, a team they slaughtered 6-0 a few weeks ago, and in their last match host LDU Quito, a match that has lost quite a bit of it’s luster since both teams should be expected to field youngsters. With all that said, a big CONGRATULATIONS to Flu, for advancing to the second round of the Libertadores for the first time in their club’s history. Indeed a reason to celebrate. Check the vid below.
