Cuenca’s Cup Dream Put to End in La Plata.
By: Mauro | April 16th, 2008Estudiantes de La Plata vs. Deportivo Cuenca (Estadio Unico de La Plata, La Plata, Argentina)
In front of their home crowd, on their own ground, Estudiantes have managed to qualify in first place in Group 2 in this year’s Copa Libertadores. After Leandro Lazzaro’s goal in the 11th minute, Estudiantes gave up the ball and the pitch to Cuenca who did little with the ball and created few scoring opportunities.
The match seemed under control and Estudiantes seemed happy with a 1-0 win despite close chances to make it 2-0 by Lazzaro and Ivan Moreno y Fabianesi. Cuenca’s Jimmy Bran took down Pablo Piatti and left Cuenca with ten men and a long trip home on their minds. Estudiantes went up 2-0 off an own goal by Polo Wila Cangá.
With this result Cuenca are done and Group 2 is over. Estudiantes advance to the next round after having gained 11 points and first place in their group. Lanús also qualified in this group. More on that match here.
I had this match going 3-1, I covered the goal difference which I felt was the difference between the two sides. Kudos for me. I was wrong again. Still, Estudiantes fans have a reason to celebrate.
