Cúcuta Qualify at 3,710 Meters Above Sea Level.
By: Mauro | April 9th, 2008Club San José vs. Cúcuta Deportivo (Estadio Jesus Bermudez, Oruro, Bolivia)
Looks like the extra days in the high altitude atmosphere actually paid off for Pedro Sarmiento’s boys. In a big win up in Oruro, 3,710 meters above sea level, Cúcuta found the final points that put them into the next round in a tough stadium. They proved that all that stuff the Brazilians had been whining about was just smoke. Earlier in the competition, San Lorenzo had also beat Potosi in a high altitude stadium. Macnelly Torres and Matias Urbano were extremely important in this win including a hat trick for Urbano who is scoring like he wants to be transferred to Europe. Cúcuta can field a diminished side in their last match, unless they want to play for first place in the group and further complicate things for Santos FC.
This win makes tonight’s match in Guadalajara unbelievably important. A Santos win sews up the group. A Chivas win forces Santos to win their last match against Cúcuta and hope that the high altitude punishes Chivas like FIFA believes it does. A draw? Hurts both but keeps CHivas at bay until the last match where Santos could win when they host Cúcuta. Confused, look at the link below and that might help.
