Cruzeiro Get 5 Really Emphatic Parting Gifts.
By: Mauro | April 17th, 2008Real Potosi hosted Cruzeiro at 3,976 meters above sea level and it showed. Potosi say goodbye to the tournament but not without flexing a little muscle. They have won two in a row, both at home, no surprise there, and from top to bottom were the better team on the pitch.
The goals started going in at the 3rd minute with a fantastic shot from Miguel Oswaldo Loayza. Alvaro Pintos beat the offside trap to score the next in the 13th. Marcelo Martins Moreno scored via a penalty kick for Cruzeiro in the 29th minute. In the second half and after the Brazilian players sucked down some much needed oxygen, Pintos again scored for San José off a rebound followed by another fantastic strike by Isidro Candía in the 67th and the last one going in 4 minutes from time when Luis Ribeiro recovered a rebound off his own shot and then danced all over the left half of the penalty area before putting it in the back of the net.
5 goals, that’s right 5 goals. I would have never, could have never thought that modest little Potosi were able to score this many goals. Unfortunately, this was a meaningless match. Regardless of the result it doesn’t change anything in terms of the teams qualifying but gives the Bolivians a chance to see that they could dominate a team that’s the caliber of Cruziero.
I had this one going 2-1 to Cruzeiro. Marcelo Martins Moreno still got one more goal to bring his tally to 7 and we’ll likely see one more in the next round. Cruzeiro also passed up the chance to become the team that earned the most points in the group stage. Cúcuta also passed on that title.
