Colo Colo look to stay in the fight. Maracaibo hopes for a miracle.
By: Mauro | April 9th, 2008Colo Colo vs. Union Atlético Maracaibo (Estadio Monumental David Arellano, Santiago, Chile)

Both teams need points tonight, but UA Maracaibo needs a win in order to continue in the race for qualification. Colo Colo got the away win against Maracaibo in Venezuela in late February and since then have taken down the 2007 Copa Libertadores champions, Boca Juniors in Chile only to lose in Buenos Aires.
Colo Colo are only one point behind Boca who lost last night against Atlas in Guadalajara. Also, Colo Colo have been coached by Fernando Astengo since the departure of the coach that took them to the Chilean championship, Claudio Borghi. He left due to exhaustion during which a row between players and club directors was taking place. The row was over prize money owed by the club to the players. So this will be Astengo’s second match in charge. His first match was a 3-1 win against Everton. They face Universidad de Chile on Saturday in the Chilean Superclasico ad rumors are that the squad is over looking tomorrow’s matches.
Maracaibo have only managed two points in the group off of two draws at home, one against Boca and the other against Atlas. They’ve got only one more match and it’s away to Boca. I’m going to go ahead and say that they’ll get no points next round so this round is it. Rumors point to the eventual sacking of Maracaibo’s coach, Jorge Pellicer.
Bottom Line: Colo Colo need at least a draw to stay in contention with Boca. Maracaibo need a win and only a win will help them along. My pick: Colo Colo win this one in blazing fashion, 3-1. It’s highly unlikely that Maracaibo will be able to swing an away win here, especially in Chile. Colo Colo might be injured from the loss of their coach, which is why I have them allowing a goal. But that’s all the Venezuelans will get.
