Chivas Get All Dressed Up With Nowhere To Go.
By: Mauro | April 17th, 2008While I had no trouble believing that Chivas could, in fact, win in Oruro, I also had no trouble believing that Santos would have no trouble taking care of a Cúcuta side that decided to rest it’s starters and fielded a team of youngsters. But if I hadn’t watched the match, via online gamecast, mind you, I wouldn’t have believed that half of the Mexican fans were already dreaming of the date in May where their side would have had another chance at showing what they were made of.
The goal that allowed so many Mexicans to dream? It was scored by Lin Carlos Henry off a beautiful free kick. Just like I said in my preview, Cúcuta scored and then closed up at the back despite the Brazilian club’s attempts to crack the Colombian defense. But late in the match, Kleber brought them level in the 68th minute with a nice turn in the area and recently (seriously, like early February-recently) signed Argentine Mariano Tripodi, off a rebound from the keeper, gave them the lead, the win, the qualification into the next round and the fans the right to drink and dance well into the night.
With this result, Cúcuta Deportivo and Santos FC have qualified for the knockout stages of this year’s Copa Libertadores.
I had this one going 1-1 but I also believed that Matías Urbano was going to be on the pitch and he wasn’t. Ah well, you can’t guess them all.
