Chivas Get All Dressed Up With Nowhere To Go.

By: Mauro | April 17th, 2008

In last night’s match, in the words of Shaquille O’Neal, Chivas brought their “A” game.

The away match rule? Out the window.

The high altitude? The high what?

Chivas were switched on from the beginning of the match relegating San José’s role in the match to the team playing the counterattack. The Mexicans chances on goal were much more frequent and deadly than the Bolivians chances. It was only a matter of time before they scored. In the 30th minute, Sergio Avila got a chance and didn’t hesitate to bury it in the back of the net. 12 minutes later, San José’s keeper saw Avila again and couldn’t stop this time either.

2-0 at the half and the Chivas faithful began to dream since the match between Santos FC and Cúcuta was 0-1 in favor of the visitors. This result, if both Chivas and Cúcuta were to hang on, both teams would advance. But it was not to be. Gonzalo Pineda added to the scoreline off a fantastic strike from a free kick to make it 3-0 in full time. Meanwhile in Brazil, Santos turned the match around on Cúcuta and qualified for the next round, thereby eliminating Chivas.

It’s the end of the road for Chivas. This is most likely the worst disappointment for Chivas in their experience in the Libertadores. This was probably their best match, but it came a little later than required to help them advance. 9 points would probably have qualified them in another group, but here in Group 6 it was not enough.

Check the CONMEBOL website for final Group 6 standings and results.
