Atl. Nacional put the hurt on Sportivo in Paraguay.
By: Mauro | April 12th, 2008Sportivo Luqueño vs. Atletico Nacional (Estadio Luqueño, Luque, Paraguay)
Atletico Nacional swaggered into the Estadio Luqueño in Paraguay and made it their own. The Colombian champions defended well and in an organized manner which made it tough for Sportivo to create any kind of danger. Atl. Nacional played a counterattacking style and capitalized on Sportivo’s mistakes to create their chances. In American goalkeeper Bryan Lopez’s debut, he was unfortunate to have a penalty called against him and three goals against him. Both teams ended the match with ten men due to the sending off of both Colombian Humberto Mendoza and Paraguayan Ignacio Paniagua. With this scoreline, Atletico add two goals to their goal difference which means they take the lead in the group over Sao Paulo who failed to win in Chile over Audax Italiano, but for more on that click here.
Sportivo are out of the tournament with Thursday night’s result. They only have 4 points and no chance of qualifying even if they should win at home against Audax. The only good news for Sportivo is that they beat Audax in Chile and Audax have not won either of their prior away matches. The numbers are in their favor and they could avoid a beating and even possibly win since they will be at their ground. The remaining matches in this group are for all the marbles. Sportivo is the only one without an option of qualifying.
I had this one ending in a tie since I’m always adverse to picking away teams to win as it happens very infrequently. But kudos to Atl. Nacional, away wins are not easy despite who you play.
