América to Continue Dream at La Casa Blanca.
By: Mauro | June 1st, 2008
While not nearly as hotly contested in the press this week as the Boca-Flu semifinal, this one is considered “the other semifinal.” Now while the expectation is that the champion is going to come from the Boca-Flu tie, I think it’s a huge mistake to underestimate either of these two squads.
While, LDU field a very organized side, América might appear to be the weaker of the two tactically. América’s defense has left something to be desired in a few of their matches. On this particular upswing, however, we are witnessing another América, one powered by heart and will and not by tactics or strategies.
Still, LDU Quito have a fantastic offense, one that should put fear in the heart of any of the four defenses remaining in the competition. With, Damian Manso, Luís Bolaños and Joffre Guerrón pulling the strings in the midfield, and a quick, deadly Claudio Bieler up front, this is not an offense to scoff at. Even though, Bolaños was sent off in the first leg, it doesn’t take much away from LDU.
América, meanwhile, is looking to get into the finals again for the their first time since reaching the same instance in 2001 against Boca, something that could repeat itself should the right results come to pass.
Also, América are counting with the co-leading goal scorer of the competition, Salvador Cabañas on their squad. Along with Germán Villa and Enrique Esqueda, this makes for a respectable offense. Also with Federico Higuain coming off the bench, they have a good chance of keeping this second leg a close one. They will also be without central defender Sebastian Dominguez who was sent off in the first leg.
